New York-based Ener1 (AMEX: HEV) announced today that its battery subsidiary EnerDel and Norway's Think Global successfully demonstrated an operational battery pack in a Think City electric vehicle.
Ener1 said the lithium-ion battery pack integration was completed ahead of schedule at its manufacturing facility in Indianapolis.
"This is a very exciting program to be involved in, with an aggressive time to market schedule," said Ulrik Grape, CEO of EnerDel.
"A lot of work remains both in terms of testing and evaluation, but we anticipate that we will be able to meet the schedule set by our supply agreement to begin production of integrated battery packs by the end of this year."
Ener1 said that EnerDel delivered three functional 27 kilowatt lithium-ion battery packs to Think Global earlier this year for testing.
The Florida firm said both companies are working to meet a scheduled roll-out of pre-production units over the next three months.
"We are very pleased with the progress EnerDel and Think have made on the lithium-ion battery solution for the Think City vehicle," said Jan-Olaf Willums, CEO of Think Global.
In April, Think Global announced plans to bring its compact Think City electric vehicle to the North American market (see Think electric cars coming to North America).
The company formed Think North America in partnership with its investors RockPort Capital Partners and Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers.
Think Global expects to start selling the Think City in North America in 2009.
