The Florida Municipal Power Agency announced today that it signed a letter of intent with Beltsville, Md.-based SunEdison for 10 megawatts of solar power.
The agency did not disclose the financial terms of the deal, but said the 20-year power purchase agreement covers solar photovoltaic capacity to be installed at several locations throughout Florida.
"The letter of intent is an important first step for Florida in developing a solar program for our municipal utility members," said Roger Fontes, general manager and CEO of the Florida Municipal Power Agency. "We are excited that large-scale solar power is becoming a reality in the Sunshine State."
The agreement with SunEdison includes installation, construction, monitoring and operation of the solar systems.
In May, Charlotte, N.C.-based Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK) announced that it signed a deal to buy 16.1 MW solar power from SunEdison (see Duke Energy to get solar power from SunEdison). That deal is also a 20 year contract.
The Florida Municipal Power Agency and SunEdison plan to complete the negotiation, execution and delivery of final project agreements this fall, with the installation expected to be complete by the end of 2009. The two will begin inspections of potential sites and locations at several of the agency's member cities for project development.
The agency is a wholesale power company owned by 30 municipal electric utilities in Florida and serves approximately 2 million customers in the state.
