GreenFuel emissions-to-biofuel South African licensing deal

November 15, 2006 - by Dallas Kachan, Cleantech Group

GreenFuel Technologies Corporation, a developer of algae bioreactor systems that recycle CO2 in smokestacks gases into biofuels, has signed an agreement to license its technology to Global Renewable Energy Efficiency Network, or G.R.E.E.N, a newly formed biofuels company in the Republic of South Africa.

Global Renewable is headquartered in Johannesburg. The company will have the rights to install and operate GreenFuels Emissions-to-Biofuels algae bioreactor systems at multiple locations.

GreenFuels technology uses naturally occurring algae to recycle carbon dioxide in power or industrial plant flue gases into clean, renewable biofuels such as biodiesel.

When algae are introduced to a rich carbon source, such as the flue gas emissions of a power plant, they propagate exponentially compared to traditional agricultural crops and do not compete for land or water that might otherwise be used for food production.

Plans are underway for Global Renewable to deploy a GreenFuel-based unit at a power station in Johannesburg. It will be a first stage of testing to optimize algae growth based on local climate, water and solar conditions.
