UK law to drive smart-meter market

The UK plans to require all households to have smart meters by 2020.

New Energy Focus reports that the proposal is part of an energy policy planned to be unveiled Nov. 5. The government expects to take two years to plan the program and 10 years getting smart meters into every home.

The news is clearly good for vendors such as Turkey-based smart meter manufacturer Elecktromed, which announced yesterday a supply deal with Enfora, a supplier of intelligent wireless networking solutions (see Enfora, Elektromed in smart meter deal).

UK lawmakers said this week that the smart meters would be integral to the success of a new renewable energy feed-in tariff.

The move is yet another example of smart grids transitioning from science fiction into reality. The sector raised $202 million in equity in the third quarter, up from an average of less than $30 million a quarter for the previous 10 quarters (see Cleantech investment breaks all-time record).
