ElectraLink picks eMeter's smart grid software for UK market

August 18, 2009 - by Lisa Sibley, Cleantech Group

San Mateo, Calif.-based eMeter said today that London-based ElectraLink has picked eMeter’s software to service its energy retailers, networks and agents throughout the UK.

EMeter’s smart grid management software, including its EnergyIP software chosen by ElectraLink, is used in smart meter deployments by utilities. EMeter has about 24 million smart meters under contract with utilities worldwide.

ElectraLink provides infrastructure, data, governance and consulting services to UK utilities, including now being able to offer eMeter's software capabilities to manage the smart grid. Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.

The partnership is expected to enable the exchange of smart meter data used to drive business processes such as registration, installation, billing, and customer operations.

It is also anticipated to be used to process smart meter interval data and communicate that information in real-time or as needed to UK market participants.

The software’s architecture allows it to be the single platform that links smart meter suppliers and grid technologies with energy retailers and network operators’ business information systems.

The UK government is committed to requiring all households to have smart meters by 2020 (see UK law to drive smart-meter market). But because specific regulations regarding implementation are still being developed, ElectraLink said it wanted an adaptable solution that could meet changing regulatory conditions.

ElectraLink said it was impressed with eMeter’s success in Ontario, Canada, and Texas. In February, Texas-based CenterPoint Energy selected eMeter to supply software for a 2 million smart meter program that it is rolling out to its electric customers (see CenterPoint rolls out $640M smart meter project in Texas).

EMeter has also signed on to provide software to 5.3 million Southern California Edison smart meters (see $1.6B smart meter program starts in California) and 4.5 million meters for Ontario's Independent Electricity System Operator.

Last month, eMeter raised $32 million in a Series C round led by first-time investor Sequoia Capital. The money is expected to be the final round of outside funding needed to push the startup into profitability (see Watch out Microsoft: Sequoia leads $32M round for eMeter).
