San Francisco-based distributed solar power company Recurrent Energy selected Rochester Hills, Mich.-based Energy Conversion Devices (Nasdaq:ENER) (ECD) to provide 4.8 megawatts of its solar generating systems for a project in Spain, ECD said today.
ECD, which includes subsidiary United Solar Ovonic, makes flexible, thin-film solar laminate products for the building integrated and commercial rooftop markets.
ECD plans to supply its branded Uni-Solar laminates and provide development resources through its subsidiary, Solar Integrated, to eight building rooftops at ProLogis Park Sant Boi in Barcelona and ProLogis Park Alcala in Madrid, Spain. Construction is expected to begin this month.
The photovoltaic systems are expected to consist of Uni-Solar laminates combined with a bituminous waterproofing system from channel partner Soprema and its subsidiary Solardis. The waterproofing material is applied directly on the roof.
Installation is expected to be conducted by Soprema’s local installer Master Renovables.
The solar power systems are to be owned by Recurrent Energy, and installed on rooftops Recurrent Energy is leasing from ProLogis. Financial details were not disclosed.
Recurrent Energy previously announced the co-development arrangement with ProLogis. This is expected to be Recurrent's first entry into the European market. Recurrent also received a feed-in tariff from the Spanish government for the projects, which are expected to begin commercial operation in mid-2010.
ProLogis, which provides distribution facilities on a global level, already has Uni-Solar systems installed on its facilities in the United States, Spain and France (see California Dreamin' of miles of solar).
About 80 percent of ECD's products are currently distributed in Europe, but the company is looking to expand its U.S. presence as well (see ECD expands on U.S. East Coast with Mercury deal).
United Solar Ovonic has secured numerous orders for the Uni-Solar technology (see $5.8 million UNI-SOLAR BIPV order from Unimetal in Italy, Uni-Solar lands $15M German order and New $9m Air Force contract for UNI-SOLAR).

Recurrent Energy said nothing of the sort today
Submitted on October 5th, 2009 by ECD Fan (not verified)Recurrent Energy said that on Sep 29th, as reported by Bloomberg news, not today. Bloomberg news, unlike you, apparently has capable journalists and rigorous editorial control. You failed to notice that Soprema/Solardis were a direct competitor of SIT with their Sarnafil membrane, and you failed to question why Soprema, a French company, will be dumping its inventory in Spain, given the higher (BIPV) tariff in France. What orders have been secured in the past six months by Unisolar? Surely, you wouldn't count inventory liquidation as a new order, would you?

Re: Recurrent Energy said nothing of the sort today
Submitted on October 5th, 2009 by Lisa SibleyThe story mentions that Recurrent Energy announced this project previously, but ECD’s involvement only came to light today. We clarified the brief to attribute this announcement to ECD. Thank you for your added information. The goal of this was a news brief, not an investigative piece.
