38 MW farm to boost EDF’s wind energy presence in Europe

October 21, 2009 - by Lisa Sibley, Cleantech Group

Paris-based EDF Energies Nouvelles said today it is commissioning a wind farm in Greece with the capacity to generate 38 megawatts as part of its wind energy expansion plans in Europe.

The wind farm, called Viotia 2, is expected to be located in Beotia, northwest of Athens. Danish wind turbine maker Vestas Wind Systems is expected to supply the farm’s 19 turbines.

Earlier this week, Vestas unveiled its integrated production base in China (see Vestas unveils integrated wind production base in China).

The Viotia 2 is to be owned by the EDF Energies Nouvelles group, which holds 52.2 percent through its EDF EN Greece and RETD subsidiaries, and by PPC Renewables, a subsidiary of Greek national electricity company Public Power.

This builds on EDF’s announcement last month to commission a 13.8 MW Castanet wind farm in the south of France, to include 2.3 MW turbines from German manufacturer Enercon.

EDF (EPA:EEN), with operations in Europe and North America, said this is expected to be its seventh project in Greece, where it has commissioned 187.4 MW in gross capacity to date.

While focused on the wind energy and solar markets, EDF also develops small hydro, marine energy, biomass, biofuel and biogas projects (see EDF Energies Nouvelles signs third PV supply contract).
