Note: the greening of Major League Baseball started here

March 22, 2007 - by Dana Childs, Cleantech Group

Major league baseball team the San Francisco Giants and west coast utility Pacific Gas and Electric Company today announced a joint partnership to install a solar system at AT&T Park in San Francisco.

AT&T Park

A different kind of solar park than we normally write about.

PG&E is to install up to 590 Sharp solar panels in three areas of AT&T Park, no doubt to maximize solar—and PR—exposure.

PG&E is to connect the 120 kilowatts of power generated from the array into San Francisco's power grid. One hundred kilowatts of solar energy "is enough to power the Giants' new state-of-the-art Diamond Vision scoreboard for the baseball season," which "will use 78% less energy than the ballpark's original scoreboard," the groups noted in a statement.

The joint press event also featured San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, who is leading the left-leaning city on an ambitious plan to become the greenest city in the nation.
