Plug Power signs fuel cell system distributor in India

April 5, 2007 - by Dana Childs, Cleantech Group

Fuel cell maker Plug Power (NASDAQ: PLUG) today announced a non-exclusive agreement with Telecommunications Consultants India Ltd. (TCIL) to market, distribute and service Plug Power's GenCore® product line.

Plug's GenCore line includes backup power products for the telecommunication, uninterruptible power supply and electric utility markets. The hydrogen-fueled GenCore 5-kilowatt backup fuel cell system is available in seven configurations.

TCIL, a division of the government of India's Department of Telecommunications, will seek opportunities to support existing projects it is developing globally, as well as government-owned telecommunications providers in India.

The telecommunications market in India is growing at a rate of four million subscribers per month, due largely to the rapid expansion of wireless networks.

The growth of the market, combined with a relatively fragile utility grid, creates strong opportunities for Plug Power's backup and primary-power fuel cells to support the nation's telecommunications infrastructure, the company said.

"India holds tremendous potential for on-site generation technologies that can deliver reliable power in a clean, environmentally responsible manner," said Dr. Roger Saillant, Plug Power's President and CEO.

The announcement comes a day after the company announced the closing of its aquisition of Cellex Power (see Plug Power acquires forklift fuel cell maker Cellex.)
