At the depth of the global economic crisis, Korea launched the Green New Deal declaring “Low-carbon, Green growth” as the new 60-year vision for South Korea. The key policy changes are targeting the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the fostering of green technologies and industries. The South Korean Government will invest KRW 50 trillion (approximately $50 billion), to catalyze a shift from manufacturing and export-based growth to green industry, providing a present need for overseas partnerships and investment.

Korea is currently known as a leader in industries such as shipbuilding, petrochemicals, appliances and semi-conductors, but this Green Growth initiative aims to redesign the nation’s existing industrial structures and transform them into low carbon industries at all levels of the value chain.

In concert with the government, private businesses have been investing boldly in technologies such as new and renewable energy, electric cars, rechargeable batteries and LEDs. Market-driven green growth has now taken hold and the transition towards a green economy is accelerating.
