The Global Cleantech Innovation Index (GCII), a biennial index and report, was first created in 2012 to investigate the question: Which countries currently have the greatest potential to produce entrepreneurial cleantech start-up companies and which will commercialise clean technology innovations over the next 10 years?

This index remains the only study—that we know of—seeking to look at why entrepreneurial companies developing sustainable innovations seem to spring up in certain geographies, and which economic, social and environmental conditions cultivate hotbeds for such innovation.
