The Week in Cleantech: June 24 – 30
Investors were certainly conscious of the quarter’s closing and the start of summer last week, as several big venture deals crossed our news feeds.
Skyonic, a developer of CO2 mineralization technology for industrial carbon capture, raised a whopping $128 million growth round from VCs and strategic investors from the conventional energy industry including Cenovus Energy, ConocoPhillips, BP Ventures, and Energy Technology Ventures (which is a corporate venture capital partnership among ConocoPhillips, GE, and NRG Energy). This investment, in tandem with $80 million in project financing secured in April, will help the company launch its first commercial plant.
Additional big VC rounds were announced during the week by Blu Homes (Energy Efficiency), Marrone Bio Innovations (Agriculture), Roka Bioscience (Agriculture), and Scifiniti (Solar).
In the world of tax-advantaged project finance in the US solar PV industry, Sunrun and SunEdison followed up SolarCity‘s announcement in May of a $500 million fund by securing major project loan commitments of their own. Sunrun’s new $630 million fund came from previous and new investors, including JP Morgan Chase, while SunEdison’s new $100 million fund came from Wells Fargo.
