To achieve its sustainability goals, Swire Properties is now seeking solutions that reduce GHG emissions from building energy use through hydrogen technology (with on-site hydrogen generation and fuel cell technology) or other low/zero carbon energy sources which are capable of generating on-site power for buildings. The Challenge
To reduce GHG emissions from building energy use through hydrogen technology (with on-site hydrogen generation and fuel cell technology) or other low/zero carbon energy sources which are capable of generating on-site power for buildings.
Swire Properties aims to reduce Scope 1 and 2 absolute emissions by 25% and 46% by 2025 and 2030. Much of their emissions come from electricity consumption; thus, they aim to explore technologies which can generate clean electricity on-site and can be used as standalone individual power sources for building usage.
Solutions can include but are not limited to: on-site hydrogen production (green/blue hydrogen), hydrogen fuel cells for building use, distributed energy storage solutions, on-site distributed geothermal systems, and waste-to-power systems.
The Opportunity
Swire Pacific’s Sustainable Development Fund, an annual HK$100 million fund, seeks primarily to fund proof of concept pilots of innovative technologies and approaches that, when scaled up more widely within the group’s various operations, have the potential to significantly positively impact environmental performance of operating companies.
The innovator chosen for a pilot project aimed at solving the challenge presented here, will be awarded full funding for that pilot. If results are successful, this partner may have the opportunity to scale their solution across the operating company’s operations and, where applicable, across Swire’s portfolio of companies in Property, Aviation, Beverages, Marine Services and Trading & Industrial.
