What You Need to Know
To reduce the air-conditioning electricity consumption in buildings through efficient dehumidification of fresh air.
The electricity consumption for Swire Properties waterside air-conditioning occupies over 50% of the total building energy consumption in typical office and mall locations. Approximately up to one third of this electricity consumption is to treat the latent load or water moisture of fresh air. Exploring an efficient dehumidification solution will help reduce electricity consumption.
Solutions may include, but not limited to: moisture-capturing materials or selective membranes to filter water from the air, solutions that can be integrated into the HVAC system for humidity control (liquid desiccant systems, water-source heat pumps, installable machines, etc.), research-phase technologies in their infancy as long as they are deployable for buildings and impact can be demonstrated.
Swire Pacific’s Sustainable Development Fund, an annual HK$100 million fund, seeks primarily to fund proof of concept pilots of innovative technologies and approaches that, when scaled up more widely within the group’s various operations, have the potential to significantly positively impact environmental performance of operating companies.
The innovator chosen for a pilot project aimed at solving the challenge presented here, will be awarded full funding for that pilot. If results are successful, this partner may have the opportunity to scale their solution across the operating company’s operations and, where applicable, across Swire’s portfolio of companies in Property, Aviation, Beverages, Marine Services and Trading & Industrial.
