The Challenge

Swire Coca-Cola HK (SCCHK) is looking for solutions to track, reimburse and promote the return, collection and recycling of used plastic beverage bottles.

 In partnership with Drink Without Waste (DWW) and in anticipation of oncoming Producer Responsibility Scheme on Plastic Beverage Containers requirements, SCCHK is looking for smart ways to 1) verify and track used, locally-sold plastic beverage bottles; 2) verify and track collection from and refunds given to cleaners and other informal collectors; 3) verify and track collection and transport by, and payments made to, recyclers/logistics providers.

Solutions could leverage the informal waste collection sector, and may include, but are not limited to, collection apps; optical sensors; traceability, security & anti-fraud software; tags; tracking and payment systems; cleaning and logistics services. However, Reverse Vending Machines are excluded.

The Opportunity

Swire Pacific’s Sustainable Development Fund, an annual HK$100 million fund, seeks primarily to fund proof of concept pilots of innovative technologies and approaches that, when scaled up more widely within the group’s various operations, have the potential to significantly positively impact environmental performance of operating companies.

The innovator chosen for a pilot project aimed at solving the challenge presented here, will be awarded full funding for that pilot. If results are successful, this partner may have the opportunity to scale their solution across the operating company’s operations and, where applicable, across Swire’s portfolio of companies in Property, Aviation, Beverages, Marine Services and Trading & Industrial.
