After celebrating a highly memorable 10th anniversary of Cleantech Forum Europe in Stockholm in 2014, we are delighted to return to Sweden’s capital and major European startup hub for our 15th edition – mark your calendars for May 21-23, 2019!

This annual gathering of the European innovation community offers a wide-ranging, three-day program along with exclusive opportunities to network, learn, and get deals done. Since 2002, Cleantech Group has brought together clean technology’s most influential leaders – corporate executives, startup and growth company CEOs, investors, government agencies, and other players – from across all areas of resource innovation, from the major industrial verticals, and from across the globe.

What to Expect

Our Cleantech Forums give you a glimpse of the future, get you out of your everyday silos, provide a different perspective, and help you find innovations of relevance to you that are in adjacent or altogether different industrial and technology areas. We convene the game-changers from multiple sectors all in one place for three days, from 25+ countries, and from over 100 cities worldwide. Our 17-year history of Cleantech Forums speaks to the importance of our events in getting deals done (or started), and the feedback we receive from attendees each year highlights the unique opportunities found at our Forums.

Welcome to our 15th Cleantech Forum Europe, our Crystal Anniversary!

In 2014, we marked our 10th Cleantech Forum Europe with a report entitled Looking Forward, Looking Back: the Best is Yet to Come in which the argument was made as to why our sustainable innovation theme looked well-set for the 10 years ahead from 2014. Five years on, we are back in Stockholm, this time to mark our Crystal Anniversary.

We will take a critical look at how that best is coming on, and to identify who and what will be part of the next wave.

With a perfect sense of timing, in February 2019, one of Europe’s leading next-generation energy companies, sonnen, has just been acquired, a moment I recently likened to “our Netscape moment.” In 2014, then as sonnenbatterie, the company made our Global Cleantech 100 list for the first time. The CEO will be with us to look back at their story, and to look forward to where things may head in the next chapter, as part of our mission to highlight the trends, companies, investors and corporate partners to watch out for.

This Forum will also look to identify other topics and themes where the best is yet to come, and will showcase more than 50 emerging companies from Europe and beyond, looking for capital and industrial partners.

Our preliminary agenda can be seen below. It will be updated regularly, as we spend March finalizing sessions and confirming more speakers.

As we work toward finalizing the program, please nominate speakers who will be relevant to our plans below or speakers who bring other subjects/perspectives you believe are of interest to our audience. Deadline: 31 March 2019

  • Heat: An Opportunity As Big As Power and Transportation Combined

From industrial waste heat to residential air conditioning, heat is one of the major contributors to the global GHG emissions, and often not given the attention that it needs. This session will evaluate some of the innovative solutions to tackle the heating challenge, exploring alternative heat de-carbonization pathways, including digitization of heating systems, conversion of the gas grid to low-carbon hydrogen, and emerging waste heat recovery solutions.

  • Linking the Food Chain: How to Waste Less Food with On-Demand Logistics

How do you get food from field-to-fork fast, and how is this going to help us reduce waste? Food delivery is more convenient than ever for consumers, with direct-from-farm business models and a network of grocery and cooked food delivery options available on your phone. The new food system relies heavily on efficient logistics systems and less on a supermarket’s ability to predict and drive demand. This session aims to understand how this system provides fresh opportunities to reduce food waste.

  • Transition Break
  • Hydrogen: Reimagining its Role in the European Economy

Government support, tightening emission regulations and decreasing equipment costs are just some of the factors influencing the new narrative around hydrogen in Europe. Once solely considered an industrial feedstock, hydrogen is now being seriously considered as a key component for the region’s decarbonization efforts. This session will explore why hydrogen has come back in vogue, diving into what role it can play within different sectors such as heating, power, and industry across Europe.

  • Approaches to Assess and Measure Impact

It is increasingly common for companies and investors alike – within the context of the rise of ESG – to make some estimation of their impact. This session will highlight some such approaches, including Mission Innovation’s Framework for Assessing Avoided Emissions, with a view to discussing which are useful, and in which circumstances.

  • Where is the Best Yet to Come?

Our final day is set to open with some thoughts on where the best is indeed still to come, on some areas where more attention is required, and on some industries that are lagging behind.

  • Under the Sea: Gathering and Leveraging Data in Aquaculture

The quality of data in fish farms defines not only the efficiency gains that can be made on the farm, but also how effectively services such as feed suppliers and O&M contractors are able to provide for the farm. Improving this data quality is critical; however, it is primarily gathered in testing environments. Getting good data at the farm level is the first step in providing a more traceable product to the consumer. This session will look at how we are improving the gathering and leveraging of data in aquaculture.

  • Reforming an Age-Old Industry: How Sustainable Chemistry is Enabling a Circular Economy

The 20th century chemicals industry developed dozens of fossil-based materials that formed the foundation of our current linear economy, a system that consumes the resource equivalent of 1.6 earths annually and threatens to pollute the environment beyond repair. The push towards a circular economy has ushered in a new mandate for the chemicals industry – to develop new materials, processes and business models that will enable an economy fit for the 21st century and beyond. With the help of top innovators and investors in the field, we will look to understand how this transformation is taking place, and at what speed.

  • Networking Break (Fika)
  • Changing Clothes: The Circular Fashion Economy

Fast fashion – mass-produced, inexpensive, throwaway clothing – is damaging the environment and the workers who make it. Textile dyeing is the second largest polluter of clean water globally (after agriculture), and reams of un-recyclable materials are being discarded in landfill. However, innovation in textiles, factories, and supply chain practices are emerging to offer viable alternatives to the make-use-dispose model of fashion. In this session, we will highlight some of the innovators and enablers addressing these issues.

  • The Circular Water Economy: Opportunity & Innovation

More efficient treatment, disposal, and reuse of industrial wastewater can play an important part in both driving profit margins and addressing climate damage. Innovative treatment solutions and new business models are enabling a shift towards more efficient and affordable wastewater treatment systems. In this session, we will dive into some of the market dynamics in this sector, with some European startups and corporates who are leading the charge in converting wastewater into valuable assets.

  • Beyond the Mobility Hype: In Search of Sustainability in Maritime Transportation

There are mega amounts of investment capital fueling the development of electric and autonomous vehicles and the rise of next-generation mobility models. All very important (albeit, there is real danger of a bubble developing), but the world of shipping is getting less attention, an industry we called out in 2017 on the occasion of our 15th Cleantech Forum San Francisco as one to watch over the next 15 years. With over 50% of goods arriving in Europe by ship, this session will look to landscape how and what sustainable innovations are emerging around maritime transportation.

  • Networking Break (Fika)
  • What's on the 15-Year Horizon?

This being our 15th (Crystal) anniversary of Cleantech Forum Europe, it only seems right to end the Forum with a look-forward session to highlight 2-3 subjects that may well emerge as key innovation topics during the 2020s.

How to Get to Stockholm / The Venue

Air Travel

There are many daily direct flights to Stockholm from major cities across the world.

Do note that there are at least 3 airports that might be described by airlines (especially Ryanair) as Stockholm Airport. Arlanda is the main airport, and the one most travelers will likely use. Bromma, Skavsta and Västerås are the others in the Stockholm region.

From the airport to the venue or Hilton Stockholm Slussen

When you arrive at the Stockholm Arlanda Airport, take the Arlanda Express train to Stockholm Central Station.

The Arlanda Express is the fastest (20 minutes) and our recommended option for either single travelers or in traffic rush hours. It costs SEK 295 one way and SEK 570 for a round trip (approximately €28-30 or € 55-57). You can then catch a taxi at the Stockholm Central Station, and in 5-10 minutes you will be at the Hilton Stockholm Slussen Hotel or at the venue, Münchenbryggeriet.

A fixed price taxi from the airport would likely cost about twice as much (between SEK 450-500 one way), so it could be a good option if you are sharing. Do note that prices charged by taxis in Stockholm are NOT regulated and so prices charged per km can vary a lot. We would advise only getting in a taxi where you know the fixed price to/from airport or, in the city, whose highest unit price is between, say SEK 290 – 390. You can see this on a very visible yellow label, usually on the rear door window, before entering the vehicle (see here for photo and more information).

Uber does operate in Stockholm, but do not expect significant price differences, as all ride-hailing cars are taxi-registered cars.

By bus to the venue and Hilton

You can also take the Flygbussarna bus shuttle from the airport to Stockholm City Terminal. Change to the red subway line towards Norsborg or Fruängen. Get off at Mariatorget. Take the Torkel Knutssonsgatan and Polishuset exit. As you exit the subway station, make a right down Torkel Knutssonsgatan and follow the street about 400 meters to the Brewery Conference Centre, located at Torkel Knutssonsgatan 2 on your left-hand side.
