29 January 2022 Update
Following a highly vibrant and successful in person program last week, this week coming we are delighted to welcome all our registrants and their colleagues and more beyond, back for a high quality digital program (Feb 1-3, 9-12 PT), taking on a rich and diverse range of subjects ranging from US government policy to Quantum Computing, and meeting new innovation companies.
The emphasis continues on deep decarbonization subjects (e.g. ammonia, hydrogen, methane, and steel), spotlights corporate action takers (e.g. Amazon, Google, and Maersk) and features subjects we think you should be paying attention to in 2022+ (e.g. circularity, mining, offshore wind, and the evolution of the voluntary carbon markets).

In Person: Palm Springs 24-26 January (300 limit)
On Screen: 24 January-11 February
Our theme, From Commitments to Actions: the sprint to net zero will inspire you to find your next partner and discover the innovations transforming our shared future.
Choose from two ways to join us, In Person and On Screen
In person
To create an event focused on big ideas, high-value networking and your personal comfort, we’re limiting the Forum to just 300 guests. If you’re as ready for the excitement and energy of an in-person forum as we are, join us in Palm Springs:
- Connect face-to-face to new opportunities with the North American ecosystem and beyond. Seventy-five percent of the 300 places are reserved for innovation companies and investor/corporates. Expect quality, in-person deal-making.
- Meet leading innovators including companies in the 2022 Global Cleantech 100.
- Gain insight into trends and innovations powering a cleaner, cooler world. See the in-person agenda.
- Access the benefits of our on-screen program from 24 January – 11 February. You can attend sessions on more topics, meet different companies, connect with attendees of the in-person and on-screen events plus watch on-demand recordings and download presentations.
Find out who is attending.
Aside from our sponsors, places will be capped at two per organization initially. This may decrease to one as places start filling up. For every in-person attendee, your organization benefits from one additional ticket to the on-screen program. We have reached our limit for non-US innovation companies.
Don’t be disappointed.
On screen
Our easy-to-use online platform gives you the power to network with cleantech leaders, attend sessions, view on-demand recordings and set up meetings with future partners all at the click of a mouse.
- Connect to leading innovators, investors and corporates exploring the opportunities that can take us from commitments to actions. You’ll have access to all our on-screen attendees as well as the 300 joining us in Palm Springs.
- Attend a wide-range of live online sessions between 24 January – 11 February. You can also watch recordings of any online sessions you miss, download presentations and set up meetings until the platform closes on 11 February. See the on-screen agenda.
Who Attends?
Who Attends
Whether you join us in person or on screen, the Forum connects the latest generation of start-ups with investors and corporates looking for new partners. From co-investors to GPs and LPs, you’ll meet the partners who can take you in new and exciting directions. For both the in-person on on-screen programs, we expect to attract the same numbers we have in previous years.

Polo RoomExecutive Summit: Post Cop-26, What Now, What Next for this Innovation Ecosystem?
For earlier arrivals, we wish to offer this limited places, Executive Summit collaborative brainstorm, to take stock post COP-26, and to get set for 2022+.
We now have one year less in which to perform what last year’s keynote speaker, Dr Fatih Birol, the IEA Executive Director has described as “perhaps the greatest challenge humankind has ever faced”. Namely, the sprint to net zero by 2050, to emissions-halving by 2030.We will conduct a “sprint” of our own – a collaborative session to propose and prioritize answers to the following questions. What is needed for this speed and scale to be possible? Are there technology/solution groupings that should now be prioritized over others? If so, which are they? What is needed for this innovation ecosystem to thrive? What key messages does this innovation community wish to send to policy makers?
We will report key takeaways to the wider group in the 4.30-6.00pm opening session of the Forum
Co-hosted by: Cleantech Group and Startup Genome
This Summit is limited in size (to 40) so that participants can easily engage in conversation. And as of 14 January we had reached maximum capacity. Please email forums@cleantech.com if you are interested in being put on the waitlist to take up any places which might be freed up from here.

Landscape SessionPARALLEL SESSIONOpportunities and Challenges of Commercializing Cleantech Innovation in Mining
Many believe mining only relates to extraction, but there are multiple steps along the journey to ensure the world has the metals it needs to operate (phones, charging stations, batteries, etc.). And with each step comes climate and environmental impacts that need to be addressed if the mining sector is to maintain social license in a net-zero world. Increased electrification is one obvious trend, but operations also need to get smarter and more efficient, empowered by new technologies better at finding and extracting ore deposits, treating wastewater, reducing waste, storing energy and managing fleets. This panel-style session will explore.

PARALLEL SESSIONMinimizing Methane: The Fastest Route to Decarbonization
The global warming potential of methane released unburned into the atmosphere is estimated to be more than 80 times higher than CO2 within the first 20 years of its life cycle in the atmosphere. Given its harmful capacity, measures to reduce methane released in the atmosphere are highly effective over the critical short to medium-time frame. Methane abatement is being addressed by a range of new processes, techniques, and market-based solutions across the energy, materials, and agricultural sectors. The workshop will discuss responsibly sourced gas initiatives as well as new market-based approaches and technology platforms being developed to measure, manage, and reduce methane emissions.

BJ Johnson
CEO, ClearFlame Engines Speaker bioBJ Johnson
BJ Johnson has been CEO of ClearFlame Engines since its incorporation in 2016. The company was founded based on BJ’s graduate work at Stanford University in the Advanced Energy Systems Lab with Professor Chris Edwards, which culminated in an M.S. in 2011 and a Ph.D. in 2015, both in Mechanical Engineering. His work focused on developing ways to significantly increase the performance of, and reduce emissions from, internal combustion engines for medium- and heavy-duty applications. The research centered on the use of alcohol fuels—due to their low-cost, clean-burning properties—which he used to demonstrate an unparalleled combination of high performance and low emissions. BJ was the lead inventor on a patent filed by Stanford University on this work, which now forms the center of ClearFlame’s IP. While at Stanford, BJ was supported by fellowships from the National Science Foundation and Achievement Rewards for College Scientists organization.
As CEO of ClearFlame, BJ helped to secure a position in the Chain Reaction Innovations program at Argonne National Laboratory, which provided ClearFlame with salaries, access to lab equipment and scientists, and public research funding from the Department of Energy. BJ has worked to obtain other competitive, non-dilutive grants for ClearFlame, including Small Business Innovation Research awards from the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, and Department of Agriculture, along with a Technology Transfer grant from Stanford. BJ has also garnered additional fellowship support from the Echoing Green Foundation and the Straubel Foundation.
At ClearFlame, BJ has demonstrated his leadership by obtaining investors and strategic partners to assist in the development and deployment of the ClearFlame technology, in order to provide cleaner and more powerful engine solutions for the diesel sector. This includes support from the U.S. biofuels sector, where ClearFlame was named as of the “Next 50” upcoming companies by the Advanced Bioeconomy Leadership Conference. Experts from both the public and private sectors have been excited to back ClearFlame, because they realize the advantages that alternative-fuel heavy-duty engines offer compared to the leading alternatives.
BJ is originally from Seattle, Washington, and moved to Palo Alto, California to attend Stanford University as an undergrad—completing a B.S. with Distinction in Mechanical Engineering in 2009. While at Stanford he was a member of the Varsity swim team, which annually competed for national championships. BJ has also competed in swimming as a member of the U.S. National Team at the 2013 and 2014 World Championships, the 2015 Pan American Games, and the 2017 Maccabiah Games.

Read moreXpansiv is the global marketplace for ESG-inclusive commodities. These Intelligent Commodities bring transparency and liquidity to markets, empowering participants to value energy, carbon, and water to meet the challenges of an information-rich, resource-constrained world.
The company’s main business units include CBL, the largest spot exchange for ESG commodities, including carbon, renewable energy certificates, and Digital Natural Gas™; H2OX, the leading spot exchange for water in Australia; XSignals, which provides end-of-day and historical market data; and EMA, the leading multi-registry portfolio management system for all ESG-inclusive commodities.
With the world aligning behind aggressive goals to reduce methane emissions, Xpansiv is ready with an actionable solution—the Methane Performance Certificate (MPC) is the first tradable instrument grounded in production data to differentiate natural gas. The MPC enables natural gas producers to earn a premium for natural gas with low methane emissions intensity.
Depending on how it’s produced, the “carbon footprint” of natural gas sources can vary widely. Until recently, gas commingled in pipelines and distribution systems has been indistinguishable. As a result, it has been impossible for utilities, buyers, and consumers to know how much methane leaked into the atmosphere before the gas was consumed.
Accurately tracking provenance and GHG emissions from the production of natural gas empowers markets to differentiate products based on methane-emissions intensity. It also enables better management of ESG goals and net-zero commitments across the natural gas value chain. Producers whose calculated methane emissions are below an established benchmark can register and issue Methane Performance Certificates on the Xpansiv platform to convey the “zero carbon” mmBtu environmental claim to gas buyers.
For the first time, commodities can be traded in a digital format that includes a deeper accounting of their true cost and value. Xpansiv is dedicated to improving the way commodities are produced, managed, and traded worldwide.

- That will be achieved either from a future credit for the full value of what was not delivered (usable within 12 months) or, in the case where an in- person event (be that the whole or part of the overall event) is converted to online, the ticket type will be converted and the number of tickets will be increased to deliver equivalent value.
Cancellation by Cleantech Group
- In the unlikely event where Cleantech Group chooses to cancel an event, a full refund would be owed except in the case where an event is cancelled, through no fault of Cleantech Group (e.g. a force majeure event).
- This is a standard and necessary protection across the event industry (particularly aimed at the situation where a very late cancellation is forced upon the organizer/host at which point all the time and costs for hosting the event have been expended).
